Ego Plum is a composer, performer and visual artist from Los Angeles, CA who has created an inventive & eccentric musical world from a variety of unconventional influences: The cartoon jazz of Raymond Scott, the spastic stop-and-go arrangements of Carl Stalling (musical director for Warner Bros.
cartoons in the 1940s & 50s), the haunting beauty of Danny Elfman & Angelo Badalamenti, the avant garde pioneering of the Residents, Oingo Boingo & Devo, and the punk rock ethics of groups like the Dead Kennedys, Ramones and the Clash.Plum has released several CDs through his independent label Ebola Music Records that have helped create a loyal cult following that closely follows his endeavors in art & music. The growing interest from fans pushed Plum to create his most ambitious musical project, the Ebola Music Orchestra: a 10-piece audio/visual ensemble of horns, marimbas, accordions, strings, drums and guitars that is known for performing his carnival-esque and cinematic compositions for audiences across California. The first album by Ego Plum & the Ebola Music Orchestra is scheduled for release March 25, 2007.
Plum has parlayed his success as a visual & performance artist into a promising career as a film composer. In 2004 he scored his first feature film: The surreal dark comedy "In the Land of Milk and Money" for director Susan Emschwiller (writer of the acclaimed Ed Harris film "Pollock"). Plum was also commissioned to write music for two fashion shows: One score for the minimalist fashion line Klaklo, and another for a fashion line by Gidget Gein (co-founder and original bass player of the group Marilyn Manson). Plum has collaborated with British goth-icon David J (of Bauhaus and Love and Rockets) on the score to the film based on the legendary unsolved Hollywood murder of Elizabeth Short, "Black Dahlia Movie." Ego has also collaborated with David J and famed graphic novelist Alan Moore (Watchmen, From Hell) on an original composition based on Alan's, "V for Vendetta." Most recently, he signed on to compose the score to Paul Bunnel's 35mm black & white musical: "The Ghastly Love of Johnny X," a homage to the juvenile delinquent films and sci-fi/horror of the 1950's. The film will star two Academy Award® winners from Hollywood's golden age: George Chikaris (West Side Story, 1961) and Kevin McCarthy (Death of Salesmen, 1951) which will be released in early 2008.
